Obituary: Larry LaMotte, 60, former CNN correspondent
As a CNN correspondent, Larry LaMotte covered El Salvador's civil war, the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and the Challenger explosion. His documentaries on such topics as poverty and overpopulation were repeated award winners.
One of the most prestigious was the Alfred I DuPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award for "Iran in the Name of God."
"Larry was a great interviewer and an incredible writer," said Janice McDonald of Atlanta, a former CNN senior producer.
Mr. LaMotte, 60, of Atlanta drowned Sunday at Grayton Beach, FL, while trying to rescue his son, who survived. A memorial service is at 1 pm Friday at Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta. Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg, VA, is in charge of arrangements.
Leaving CNN in 1999, he became a certified life coach and a volunteer with the web site WebMD.
Survivors include his wife, Sandee LaMotte; three daughters, Krysta LaMotte of Atlanta, Lori LaMotte of Oklahoma City and Lisa LaMotte Buchholz of Edmond, OK; a son, Ryan LaMotte of Atlanta; his mother, Louise LaMotte of Knoxville; three sisters, Michele Valkanar of Knoxville; LaLinda Egerstrom of Minnesota and Kay Bernier of Sterling, VA; a brother, Greg LaMotte of Cairo, Egypt and a grandson.
